The melon (Cucumis melo) is a herbaceous plant with creeping stems. It is cultivated for its fruit, a large berry that is very appetizing in summer due to its high water content and sweet taste.

The plant has soft, hairy stems that grow at ground level. The flowers are yellow and there are male, female and hermaphrodite flowers. It is an extraordinarily polymorphic species both in the type of fruit and in the pulp. The colour of the fruit ranges from white to very dark green, yellow, blotchy, spotted (Spanish Piel de Sapo). The shape of the fruit ranges from spherical to ellipsoidal. Its size depends on the variety and the growing conditions. Thus, there are small melons that weigh around 400 g and very large ones that can weigh up to 10 kg,

The flesh is aromatic, with a smooth texture and different colours: yellow, green, pink and intermediate shades.

The outer rind is hard and thick, green in colour with green stripes, the shade of which will vary depending on the degree of ripeness of the fruit, the type of variety and the type of soil.

The flesh is pale green, almost yellow, with a sweet taste.
